For a properly sized softener on Calgary or Airdrie water, every two to four days is the usual answer for an average household. Some homes are every day, some every week, and both can be perfectly correct.
That vagueness is annoying but it is honest, because regeneration frequency is not a setting someone picked. It is the output of a calculation: how hard your water is, how much of it you use, and how much capacity the resin bed holds. Change any of those and the right interval changes with it.
What is genuinely useful is knowing when yours is wrong — and that is easier to spot than most people think.
What actually sets the interval
Three numbers decide it.
Your hardness. In Calgary and Airdrie that is high. City data puts the north around 126–198 mg/L and the south and southeast around 181–262 mg/L. Higher hardness means the resin loads faster, so the same unit regenerates more often in the southeast than in the northwest. Two identical softeners on opposite sides of the city genuinely run on different schedules.
How much water you use. Not how many bedrooms you have — how much water actually goes through the house. A couple with a soaker tub and a high-flow shower can out-use a family of four. Laundry volume matters more than people expect.
The resin capacity. A larger bed holds more before it needs recharging. This is why sizing is the decision that sets everything else: put in a unit that is too small and it has no choice but to cycle constantly.
Multiply hardness by daily water use and you get a daily grain load. Divide the unit's capacity by that, and you have your interval. Every properly programmed softener is doing that arithmetic continuously in the background.
Demand-initiated or timer — it matters
Demand-initiated units meter your actual water use and regenerate when the capacity is genuinely spent. Go away for a week and it will not regenerate at all. Have guests staying and it will regenerate more often. This is what we install, and it uses noticeably less salt and water.
Timer units regenerate on a fixed schedule whether they need to or not — every third day at 2am regardless of whether you were home. Simpler, cheaper, and wasteful at both ends: it wastes salt when you are away and leaves you with hard water when demand spikes.
If yours regenerates like clockwork on exactly the same days no matter what your household is doing, you have a timer unit. That is not a fault, but it is worth knowing when you next replace it.
Regenerating too often
Daily or more than once a day is usually a problem. Work through these:
It is undersized. The most common cause. A unit specified for a smaller household or softer water than it actually serves has to cycle constantly to keep up. No amount of adjustment fixes it — the capacity is not there. It also wears the control valve out years early, which is covered in how long water softeners last.
The hardness setting is wrong. If someone programmed it to a higher hardness than you actually have, it thinks the resin is exhausted before it is and regenerates early. This is common, because a lot of units get set to a default rather than to a measured number.
There is a leak inflating your water use. A running toilet passes a startling volume of water, and the softener counts every litre. Iron in the water, on a well. Iron loads the resin without being properly removed during regeneration, so the bed fouls and capacity falls. It regenerates more and softens less. That is a treatment problem rather than a softener problem — see well water treatment.
A control valve fault. Worn piston seals can let the unit cycle when it should not, or get stuck part-way through and restart. If the settings are right and nothing else explains it, that is a service call.
Regenerating too rarely — or not at all
Weekly or less can be perfectly normal for a low-use household on a generously sized unit. It becomes a problem when the water stops being soft.
The awkward thing here is that a softener that regenerates rarely and a softener that has stopped regenerating look identical from across the room. Both are quiet. Only one is working.
Causes worth checking:
- The hardness setting is too low, so it thinks capacity remains when it does not. You get hard water toward the end of each cycle.
- The salt has bridged — a hard crust spanning the tank makes it look full while nothing dissolves underneath. The unit goes through the motions with no brine.
- The injector is clogged, so it cannot draw brine even with plenty of salt. This is also the usual reason a brine tank fills with water — see why your water softener has water in it.
- The bypass valve is open, often left over from other plumbing work. Water is going around the softener entirely.
- The resin is at the end of its life. Nothing to recharge.
The one nobody checks: what time it runs
Softeners are almost always programmed to regenerate around 2am, because the house is not using water and the process takes an hour or two.
After a power cut, plenty of older units lose the time and restart the clock from whenever power came back. A unit that lost power at 2pm now regenerates at 2pm — which means it is in bypass, delivering untreated water, right through the busiest part of your day.
The symptom is odd and specific: hard water in the afternoon, soft water in the evening, and a softener that appears to be working fine. If you have had an outage and the water has felt inconsistent since, check the clock on the head. It takes seconds and it is a genuinely common fix.
How to work out what yours is doing
Watch the salt. The most practical method. Note the level, then check again in a fortnight. Consistent, gradual consumption means it is cycling. No change at all means it is not.
Read the display. Most modern control valves will show days since the last regeneration, or let you scroll to the regeneration history. The manual will tell you which button — and if the manual is long gone, the model number and a search usually finds it.
Listen at night. A regeneration is audible — water running to drain for an extended stretch. If you are up at 2am anyway, you will know.
Run a manual regeneration. There is usually a button or a dial position that starts one immediately. Watching it complete tells you whether the valve is doing all its stages, and it is the first thing we do on a service call.
Test the water. Ultimately the only measure that matters. Hard water at the tap means something in the chain is wrong regardless of what the display claims.
What the right answer looks like
For most Airdrie and Calgary homes on municipal supply, a correctly sized demand-initiated softener lands somewhere around every two to four days, at about 2am, using salt at a steady and unremarkable rate, and delivering consistently soft water throughout.
If yours is cycling daily, it is probably undersized or programmed to the wrong hardness. If it never seems to cycle and the water is hard, it is not regenerating at all. And if the water is inconsistent through the day, check the clock before anything else.
Any of those are worth sorting rather than living with. A softener that regenerates too often burns salt and water and wears its valve out early; one that does not regenerate enough is leaving scale in your water heater and on your fixtures while looking like it is doing its job.
