Common Calgary heating symptoms — and what they usually mean
Symptoms are the entry point; the underlying cause is what determines the fix. Same symptom often has 3-4 possible causes — diagnosis matters more than guessing.
Some rooms are cold while others are warm
Most common Calgary complaint. Possible causes (in order of likelihood): unbalanced registers/dampers (free fix), dirty filter restricting airflow, undersized return ducts on a renovated home, blower motor not running at design CFM (failing capacitor or ECM module), stack effect on multi-storey homes (hot air rising to upper floors in mild weather, sinking in cold), duct leakage in unconditioned spaces (attic, crawl space, garage), or undersized supply trunk to that part of the house (original construction issue). Diagnostic measurement at the registers + return + plenum tells us which.
Furnace runs constantly, house never gets warm
Possible causes: thermostat sensor failure (reading wrong room temperature), undersized furnace for the home's heat loss (rare on modern builds, common on older homes after additions), dirty filter cutting airflow severely, failing flame sensor causing intermittent shutoff (you'd see it cycle), low gas pressure (sometimes utility-side in cold snaps, sometimes a regulator issue), or cracked heat exchanger cycling the safety. Short-cycling — furnace fires for a minute, shuts off, repeats
Possible causes: dirty flame sensor (most common — quick clean), restricted airflow tripping the high-limit safety (filter, blocked returns, closed registers), failed flame rod, oversized furnace (cycles on quickly because the load is small — sizing mistake from years ago), or in HE units, a blocked condensate trap. NOTE: some short-cycling in mild Calgary weather (above 0°C) is NORMAL on properly-sized high-efficiency furnaces that have to throttle down their capacity. Below −15°C they should run longer cycles.
Banging, popping, or clanging from the furnace
Possible causes: delayed ignition (gas building in the heat exchanger before lighting — safety issue, dirty burners or failing igniter; shut off the furnace and call us), ductwork expansion/contraction when the blower kicks on (normal for some homes; can sometimes be reduced with duct stiffening), or a failing blower motor bearing. Banging on ignition is the one that matters most — that's a delayed ignition, and continuing to run it risks heat exchanger damage.
Boiler kettling — sounds like water boiling violently
Specific to hydronic systems. Caused by sediment or scale buildup on the heat exchanger that traps water and lets it flash to steam. Common Calgary cause: hard water + no annual flush + aging system. Energy bills suddenly much higher
Possible causes: failing heating system running longer cycles to maintain temperature (failing capacitor, failing motor, dirty heat exchanger), failed thermostat setpoint logic (some smart thermostats malfunction), a tight envelope retrofit that exposed an oversized furnace (now short-cycles inefficiently), duct leakage you didn't have before (wear, animal damage, renovation), or a colder-than-usual stretch of weather (compare year-over-year). Cold air blowing from the vents
Two scenarios. (1) Cold air at the START of a heating cycle, then warm — usually NORMAL on high-efficiency furnaces (the blower starts before the burner has fully heated the exchanger; takes 30-60 seconds to warm up). (2) Cold air the WHOLE cycle — abnormal; usually means the burner isn't actually firing (failed igniter, gas valve, flame sensor) but the blower is running on a thermostat call. Diagnosable in 15 minutes.
Thermostat reads wrong / won't hold setpoint
Possible causes: thermostat located in a problematic spot (drafty wall, sunlight on it, near a register, in a closed-off hallway), failed temperature sensor, low batteries, dirty contacts, or a smart-thermostat firmware issue. Sometimes the fix is moving the thermostat to a better location. Sometimes it's swapping for a more reliable model. Sometimes new batteries solve it in 30 seconds.
Strange smells when the heat runs
Burning dust (normal on first startup of the season — clears in 1-2 hours), musty smell (mold in the ductwork or evaporator coil — needs cleaning), rotten egg / sulfur (gas leak — leave the house, call your utility's emergency line, then call us), formaldehyde-like (heat exchanger crack potentially leaking combustion gases into airflow — shut the furnace off, get a CO detector check, call us). Some smells are nothing, others are a safety issue — call if you're not sure.
Humidity issues — house too dry or too humid
Forced air furnaces dry out indoor air dramatically in Calgary winters (incoming cold air carries almost no moisture; heating it without adding humidity creates 15-25% RH which is very dry). Modern high-efficiency furnaces, boilers, and tankless water heaters produce acidic condensate that drains through small PVC lines. 2. Run the system, watch the cycle
Call for heat at the thermostat, watch what the system actually does through a full cycle. Most issues show themselves during operation — slow startup, weak airflow, short-cycling, weird noises, error codes that the homeowner never saw. We measure temperature rise across the heat exchanger, static pressure across the filter, register temperatures + CFM at multiple locations.
3. Inspect ductwork, returns, registers, thermostat placement
Walk the house. Check thermostat location for problematic placement (sunlight, drafts, register proximity). 6. Recommendations beyond the immediate fix
We'll mention anything worth knowing — "your humidifier panel is overdue," "your blower motor capacitor is reading marginal and likely fails within a year," "your duct insulation has settled and air-sealing the rim joist would do more for your bills than upsizing the furnace." When heating issues mean it's time to replace
Some heating issues are repair candidates; some are signs the whole system is at end of life. Knowing the difference avoids stacked repair bills on equipment that's about to fail anyway.
Furnace 18+ years old with major failure
Modern high-efficiency furnaces last 15-20 years on average; conventional gas furnaces 18-25. Major failures (heat exchanger crack, ECM motor failure, control board failure on discontinued models) on 18+ year units rarely make repair-side economic sense. Heat exchanger crack at any age — replace
Cracked heat exchangers can leak combustion gases (carbon monoxide) into the airstream. Never repaired — safety issue. Full furnace replacement is the only safe answer. We show you the crack on a borescope before quoting. This is the non-negotiable case.
Boiler 20+ years old with major component failure
Cast iron boilers from the 60s-70s can last 50+ years but at that age, ongoing parts availability and efficiency conversations make replacement economically realistic. Modern condensing boilers usually need replacement at 15-20 years if major components (heat exchanger, control board, pumps) all start failing in sequence.
Multiple repairs in a single heating season
Rule of thumb: if you've had 3+ separate failures requiring service in the same heating season on a 12+ year unit, the system is signalling end of life. Each repair is technically possible but you're stacking bills on equipment that'll need full replacement within 1-2 years anyway.
Pair replacement with envelope or duct fixes
If we recommend furnace replacement and you've got a known envelope problem (poor insulation, old windows) or duct issues (undersized returns, leaky ducts), this is the right time to address them. Is it normal for my furnace to smell when it first runs in fall?
