Gas tank — check the pilot light first
Most older gas tanks (and some newer ones) have a standing pilot light visible through a small viewport at the base of the tank. If it's out, follow the lighting instructions printed on the unit itself — usually press and hold the gas control button for 30-60 seconds while clicking the igniter. If the pilot lights but won't stay lit when you release the button, the thermocouple has failed — that's our call. Newer high-efficiency tanks use electronic ignition and don't have a standing pilot to check.
Electric tank — check the breaker
Electric tanks pull a lot of current and have their own dedicated 240V breaker (usually a double-pole breaker labelled "hot water" or "water heater" in your panel). If it's tripped, switch it fully OFF, wait 30 seconds, then back ON. If it trips again immediately, stop — that means a short or a failed element, and continuing to reset risks damage. Some electric tanks also have a manual reset on the upper thermostat — small red button behind the upper access panel. Press it firmly. If it pops out immediately again, that's our call.
Gas valve at the meter (gas tanks + tankless)
If the gas was recently turned off at the meter (utility work, leak repair, new appliance install), your hot water tank or tankless unit won't fire. Confirm the gas valve at the meter is in the parallel-to-pipe (open) position. Also worth checking that nobody bumped the shutoff valve on the gas line right at the tank.
Tankless — check for error codes on the display
Modern tankless units (Navien, Rinnai, IBC) display error codes on the front panel when they fail. Note the code before you call — it tells us exactly which component failed, lets us bring the right part on the first visit. Power-cycle the unit (breaker OFF for 60 seconds, then back ON) to see if the code clears. If it returns, that's our call.
