Common Calgary furnace blower symptoms (and what they usually mean)

Most blower problems show up as one of these. The underlying cause varies — and the right repair depends on the cause, not the symptom.

Weak airflow from vents

Usually a clogged blower wheel (the most common Calgary cause — dusty chinook air clogs the squirrel-cage fins, dropping CFM 30-50%), a failing capacitor (running but not at full speed), or a dirty / collapsed filter. We pull the blower assembly, inspect the wheel, test the capacitor, and check the filter housing — all in one visit.

Loud rattling, squealing, or grinding noise

Rattling is usually an unbalanced or loose blower wheel — debris caught in the fins, or a wheel that's loosened on the motor shaft. Squealing is bearing failure on PSC and X13 motors (ECM motors are sealed-bearing — no squeal warning, they just stop). Grinding is bearing failure already in progress.

Blower runs constantly, never shuts off

Limit switch tripping — the furnace senses overheat (often because the blower CAN'T keep up with airflow demand) and runs the fan continuously to dump heat. 1. Symptom + history

What's happening, when it started, how the furnace was performing before. Filter change history matters a lot here — restricted airflow is the root cause of a lot of blower failures.

2. Visual inspection — wheel, motor, capacitor, wiring

Pull the blower assembly, check wheel for debris and balance, check motor housing for heat discoloration, check capacitor for bulging or leaking, check wiring connections.

3. Electrical diagnosis

Measure capacitor microfarads against rated value, measure motor amp draw against nameplate, check control board signal to motor, verify limit switch operation. 4. Airflow diagnosis

My blower runs constantly and won't shut off. What's wrong?

Almost always a limit switch tripping. The furnace senses an overheat condition and runs the blower continuously to dump heat.
