How does ion exchange actually work?
Resin beads inside the softener carry sodium ions on their surface. As your hard water flows through, calcium and magnesium swap places with the sodium — the resin holds onto the hard minerals, and your water comes out softened.
When the resin's sodium is used up, the unit "regenerates" — a brine solution (water + salt) flushes through, knocking the calcium and magnesium off the resin and recharging it with fresh sodium. The waste goes down a drain. That's the cycle in plain English.
Is softened water safe to drink?
Yes. The sodium added by a softener is small — roughly 7-10 mg per glass of water at Calgary's hardness. For comparison, a single slice of white bread contains 150-200 mg of sodium.
Individuals on strict medically-prescribed low-sodium diets (under 1500 mg/day) should consult their doctor. Most installs include a non-softened tap at the kitchen sink anyway, for drinking and cooking, which sidesteps the question entirely.
How often does a softener need salt?

Will a softener fix my discoloured water or smell?
No — those are different problems. Discoloured water usually means iron, manganese, or sediment, and needs a filtration system upstream of (or instead of) a softener. Can I install a softener myself?
