Hamptons Plumbers Calgary: Plumbing and Heating for 1990s Family Homes in NW Calgary
Any plumber in Hamptons, Calgary is working in a neighbourhood that went up almost all at once. The Federation of Calgary Communities gives 1990 as the year Hamptons was established, and census data in the City's 2021 community profile put 72% of occupied homes in the 1991–2000 band, where the figure for Calgary as a whole is 15%. So this is mostly a community of 1990s houses. Poly-B supply pipe was still going into homes for part of that decade, which means some Hamptons houses may have it and plenty won't. Our Alberta-licensed gas fitters take care of furnaces, water heaters and any gas piping, and our Red Seal journeyman plumbers deal with the water supply, the fixtures and the drains.
Hamptons sits between Stoney Trail on the north, Shaganappi Trail on the east, Country Hills Boulevard on the south and Sarcee Trail on the west. Edgemont is the neighbour to the south, Hidden Valley is over Shaganappi Trail to the east, and Citadel is to the west. According to the Federation of Calgary Communities, the land joined the city in two pieces: the southern part in 1976 and the northern part in 1989. The 2021 census counted 7,360 residents in 2,455 households. Here the homeowners association doubles as the community association and collects a fee for upkeep around the area. The community also takes in the Hamptons Golf Course, Club and Community Park.
The census found no apartments in Hamptons at all. Single-detached houses make up 85% of occupied dwellings, against 55% across Calgary, with semi-detached houses at 9% and row houses at 6%. Owners live in 92% of homes, compared with 69% citywide. So the call on Poly-B replacement, furnace replacement, hot water tank replacement or a water softener usually belongs to whoever lives in the house. We cover Hamptons as part of our NW Calgary service area.

Built through the 1990s on Calgary's NW edge
Hamptons was established in 1990, and most of its building followed within the decade. The City's 2021 profile counts 2,455 occupied homes, and 1,765 of them (72%) were built between 1991 and 2000; across Calgary that decade accounts for 15%. Another 465 (19%) date from 2001 to 2010. The census places 170 homes in 1981–1990 and 30 before that, and construction since 2011 adds up to 30 homes.
Early or late 1990s: why the year matters for Poly-B
Poly-B is a grey, flexible plastic supply pipe that was installed in Canadian homes from around 1978 to the mid-1990s. A Hamptons house plumbed in 1992 falls inside that window. One finished in 1998 is less likely to have it, but the build year alone doesn't settle the question. To check, find where the water service comes through the foundation, by the meter and the main shutoff valve, and see what's connected either side. Then check both water connections at the water heater, the cold feed and the hot line leaving it. Poly-B is nearly always grey and often stamped PB2110. When it fails, it's usually at a joint rather than partway along a run, so leave the fittings alone: don't twist or pull on them to see if they're sound. If the pipe has been painted, boxed in or is hard to see, we can identify it in person. Do I need to replace Poly-B? helps you decide whether to replace it now or plan for it.
What a repipe costs in a finished house
Replacing the Poly-B supply pipe throughout a house costs $3,500 to $7,250 as of September 2026. What moves a house up that range is mostly what has been finished since it was built: a drywalled basement ceiling, a third or fourth bathroom, and runs that are awkward to reach all add time. An open mechanical room and fewer fixtures keep it nearer the bottom. You'll have the number before any drywall is opened. Poly-B replacement explains the job, and Poly-B replacement cost in Calgary breaks the range down.
Bigger households, more hot water
The average Hamptons household is about three people, compared with 2.6 across the city. A third of households (34%) have four or more people, against 26% citywide, and only 9% are one person living alone, where the Calgary figure is 26%. More people means more showers in a row, more laundry and more demand on the water heater.
Sizing the water heater to the busiest hour
Size the water heater from the busiest stretch of the day, not from the number of bedrooms. If three people shower one after another before school and work, a tank that suited two adults can run cold before the last one is done. As of September 2026, atmospheric tanks, the type that vent through a metal pipe by natural draft, cost $1,950 for 40 gallons, $2,100 for 50, $2,450 for 60 and $2,990 for 75. Power-vent tanks are quoted separately. A tankless water heater is $5,400 to $6,500 as of September 2026. It heats water as you draw it, so it doesn't empty the way a tank does, but it can only feed so many taps at once, and it needs enough gas supply and a vent of its own. Hot water tank replacement covers the job, hot water tank replacement cost in Calgary the pricing, and tankless vs tank water heaters in Calgary the choice between the two.
Hard water from the Bearspaw plant
The City of Calgary says the northern half of the city generally gets its water from the Bearspaw treatment plant, and its 2025 quarterly results for Bearspaw ranged from 141 to 200 mg/L of hardness, measured as calcium carbonate. Water like that leaves scale inside tanks, on the heat exchanger of a tankless unit, and on taps and showerheads. A water softener costs $2,250 to $3,050 as of September 2026. If what you're after is better drinking water at the kitchen tap, reverse osmosis is a separate system, at $780 to $1,440 as of September 2026; water softener vs reverse osmosis sets out which one does what. Flushing schedules come from the heater's own manual and the water it sees, and a tankless unit should be descaled by a technician, not as a DIY job.
Showers, toilets and fixtures
About one Hamptons resident in five (22%) is 65 or over, where the city figure is 13%, and owners who intend to stay sometimes want an easier shower or a taller toilet in a bathroom that dates from the 1990s. Valve and fixture changes fall under bathroom plumbing and shower plumbing. We price toilet installation on site, and a garburator runs $520 to $1,300 as of September 2026.
Furnaces, cooling and gas on a windy upland
The Federation of Calgary Communities describes Hamptons as "a slightly rolling upland plateau" with "greater wind exposure". That doesn't change what a furnace needs, but wind and drifting snow are worth keeping in mind for anything that vents through an outside wall.
Replacing a 1990s furnace
If the furnace is the one the house was built with, it's around thirty years old. A replacement costs $4,500 to $9,600 as of September 2026, depending on the unit you pick and how much venting, gas piping and ductwork has to change. We size the new furnace to the house as it stands now: insulation, windows, air leakage and Calgary's design temperature. We don't just match the old unit's badge, because new windows or extra attic insulation since the 1990s can change what the house needs. We're an authorized AirEase dealer, though we put in other brands as well. Furnace replacement covers the job and furnace replacement cost in Calgary the numbers. If yours may be worth fixing, start with furnace repair, and no heat covers what to check when the house goes cold.
Vents, exterior walls and frozen lines
A high-efficiency furnace or a tankless water heater pulls in air and pushes out exhaust through plastic pipes on an outside wall. When wind packs snow against that wall, the pipes can be buried, and a blocked intake or exhaust can shut the appliance down. After a storm, make sure both openings are clear and brush the snow away by hand. Don't take the venting apart or open up the appliance; if it won't come back on once the vents are clear, call a gas fitter. Pipes inside exterior walls and outdoor hose taps are the other things to watch in a cold snap. If a line does freeze, see frozen pipe repair.
A water heater left alone on a shared vent
A common arrangement in houses of this age has the furnace and the gas water heater sharing one metal vent up through the roof. Replace the furnace with a high-efficiency model that vents sideways through plastic pipe, and the water heater is left by itself in a vent sized for two appliances. A vent too large for what's left in it may not draw properly, which can let exhaust spill at the draft hood or moisture condense inside the pipe. When we take out a furnace in a house set up this way, our gas fitter looks at how the tank will vent on its own and tells you whether it needs resizing, a new route or a different type of water heater. Power-vent tanks carry their own quote. A working carbon monoxide alarm matters here; if it sounds, leave the house with everyone and phone 911 once you're out.
Heat pumps and mini splits
If the upstairs bedrooms are what's hard to live with in July, a heat pump added alongside the furnace gives you cooling and handles heating on milder days, with the furnace taking over in the cold. It costs $6,200 to $8,800 as of September 2026. A ductless mini split is $3,500 to $5,000 as of September 2026 and suits a room the ductwork doesn't serve well. Heat pump vs furnace in Calgary puts the two side by side, and we price central air conditioning after a look at the house.
Gas lines and garage heaters
A new gas line for a kitchen range, a barbecue on the deck or a heater in the garage is priced once we've looked at the route from the meter or the nearest branch. Gas piping needs a licensed fitter; it isn't a weekend project. A garage heater costs $4,500 to $6,500 installed, as of September 2026.
Under the basement floor: main drains, sumps and backwater valves
The floor drain in the basement is often where a main-line problem first shows itself.
Slow drains everywhere: the main line
One slow sink is usually a local clog. When every drain in the house is sluggish, or the floor drain gurgles or backs up as the washing machine empties, the trouble is more likely in the main line. Once it's flowing again, a camera goes down the line so you can watch what caused it, whether that's buildup, roots at a joint or a damaged section, and the video is yours. We don't do sewer line repair, digging or lining, so if the footage shows damage, you can hand that video to a company that digs or lines sewers. See drain cleaning.
Sump pumps are replaced, not repaired
When a sump pump fails, we put in a new one rather than repair it. As of September 2026, a ProFlo 1/2 HP replacement in the existing pit is about $504, and a new pit with a pump is around $2,000. Sump pump installation has the details.
Backwater valves against sewer surges
A backwater valve on the main drain lets wastewater out and shuts if sewage starts flowing back from the city main, so it can't rise through the basement floor drain. Where it can go depends on how the main runs under the slab and what has been built over it, so we look at the basement before we price it. Backwater valve installation cost in Calgary explains what drives the cost. Once it's in, follow the manufacturer's instructions for checking it.
Hamptons plumbing and heating questions
Is Hamptons in your service area?
It is. Hamptons is one of the communities we cover in NW Calgary, and we dispatch from both Calgary and Airdrie. We won't promise an arrival time; call 587-834-3668 and we'll tell you honestly when we can get there.
Which neighbourhoods are next to Hamptons?
Edgemont lies to the south and Hidden Valley to the east, across Shaganappi Trail. Citadel is on the west side, and Stoney Trail runs along the northern edge.
Our house went up in the 1990s. Is there Poly-B in it?
There might be. Poly-B was in use until about the mid-1990s, so the odds are better for a 1991 or 1992 house than for one from 1998 or 1999. Check the pipe next to your main water valve and the two water lines at the heater: grey, flexible pipe, often marked PB2110, is Poly-B. If you can't tell, we'll check it when we're there.
My sump pump stopped working. Can you repair it?
No. We replace failed sump pumps instead. A new ProFlo 1/2 HP pump in your existing pit is about $504, and a new pit and pump together come to around $2,000, both as of September 2026.
Do you fix damaged sewer lines?
No. We clear the main line and run a camera through it, and the recording is yours to keep and pass on to a sewer repair contractor.
Simple, honest, on your schedule.
