Low Water Pressure in Calgary: One Tap or the Whole House?

5.0· 100+ Google reviewsRed SealAlberta LicensedBBB Accredited

Before you call a plumber about low water pressure in Calgary, answer one question: is it one tap, or every tap in the house? Then work out whose side it's on, the City's or yours. When the cause is inside your home, FlameTech's Red Seal journeyman plumbers trace where the pressure is lost and price the repair before any work starts.

One weak tap or shower usually means something at that fixture: a clogged aerator, a scaled showerhead, a worn cartridge, or an under-sink shut-off left partly closed.

Weak pressure through the whole house points further back: the main shut-off, the supply pipe, a softener or filter, or City work on your street. If only the hot water is weak, the restriction is on the hot side: the water heater, its valves or the hot piping.

If the checks below don't sort it out and it isn't on the City's side, it's a plumbing repairs job. Call 587-834-3668.

One tap or the whole house?

Open a few taps around the house, hot and cold separately, and note where the pressure is weak. The pattern does most of the narrowing down.

Only one tap or shower is weak

Calgary's hard water clogs small openings, so the aerator or showerhead is the usual suspect, followed by a worn cartridge or a partly closed under-sink shut-off. If a shower is weak on hot and cold with a clean head, the valve behind the wall may need work: see shower plumbing.

Only the hot water is weak

If the cold is fine and the hot is weak everywhere, the restriction is somewhere only hot water goes: the heater, its valves or the hot piping. The City's advice for hot-water-only problems is to contact a plumber. See hot water issues for related symptoms.

The cold is weak and you have a softener

The City suggests bypassing the softener and seeing whether pressure comes back. If it does, the softener is restricting flow, often through a fouled resin bed. That's a water softener repair call, not a pipe problem.

Every tap in the house

Hot and cold weak at every fixture means the restriction is somewhere the whole supply passes: a main shut-off not fully open, City work nearby, a frozen line in winter, or scale or a leak in your own supply pipe.

Try these first: the City of Calgary's checks

These steps come from the City of Calgary's water pressure guidance. If a valve won't turn by hand, leave it and call a plumber. Don't put a wrench on a seized valve or take apart a pressure-reducing valve or main valve: a forced old valve can start leaking, and then you can't shut the water off.

Clean the aerator

Unscrew the aerator from the faucet and remove the screen. Soak the screen in vinegar for 10 to 15 minutes, rinse it and refit it. Fizzing is mineral carbonate, which the City says is harmless.

Make sure the main shut-off is fully open

It's usually in the basement close to the water tank, near the floor, or below the water meter where the main line enters. Check it's fully open. On a lever valve, open means the handle lines up with the pipe.

Check the shut-offs under your sinks

Make sure the hot and cold valves under the weak tap are fully open. Turn them gently by hand, and leave any that are stiff.

Bypass the softener if the cold is weak

Put the softener into bypass the way its manual describes and run the cold tap again. If pressure improves, the softener is the cause, and the City's advice is to call a plumber.

Check irrigation

If a sprinkler system is in use, check it for leaks. In spring, air trapped in the lines after start-up can cause low pressure that should improve once the system has run a while.

Look for City work nearby

A City notice, crews on the street, a water main break or a hydrant in use can drop pressure temporarily. Check the City's water outages page for a main break near you.

Low water pressure on the City's side or yours

Where the problem sits decides who fixes it and who pays.

In Calgary

The City owns and operates the service valve on your property line; the line from it into the house is yours. If the service valve is the problem, call 311 and City crews will investigate and repair it at no cost. For other pressure questions, call 311 or complete an online 311 request.

In winter

The City says a gradual winter pressure drop could be a sign of frozen water lines. You can report a frozen service to 311. The City may send a crew, and once you sign its work authorization form it will also try to thaw the part on your property. Repairs to the service on private property are the owner's cost, and the City notes you can choose to hire a plumber at your own expense. Never use an open flame to thaw a pipe. See frozen pipe repair and our piece on leaving taps dripping.

Why pressure differs across the city

Calgary's elevation range is almost 300 metres, so the City manages pressure in zones and has installed valves where it would exceed about 100 PSI. Homes built after 1990 in areas over 80 PSI have a pressure-reducing valve (PRV). A friend's house across the city isn't a fair comparison.

In Airdrie

The City of Airdrie owns the line from the main to the property line; the owner owns it from there in. Airdrie says a drop over a short period can come from inside the home: the softener, a filtration system or a shut-off valve. If pressure suddenly becomes very low or you have no water, contact Airdrie Water Services immediately at 403.948.8871. For work inside the house, see Airdrie plumbers.

What a plumber checks when it's inside your home

Once the City's side and the simple checks are ruled out, these are the places worth looking.

Valves

A main or branch valve can fail inside and restrict flow even with the handle fully open; old gate valves do this when the gate works loose from the stem. The fix is a new valve, and replacing the main means the City shutting off the service valve first.

Pressure-reducing valve, if you have one

A plumber can check whether a PRV is holding pressure where it should or choking it down. Don't adjust it yourself. What it needs depends on the check, and you'll have the price first.

Softener or filter restriction

A fouled softener or clogged filter cartridge can choke the whole house's supply. If bypassing it brought pressure back, see water softener repair.

Scaled galvanized supply

Old galvanized supply pipe scales up inside, and pressure falls off badly when two fixtures run at once. It can't be cleaned out, so the lasting fix is replacing the affected pipe. Our plumbing repairs page covers galvanized supply in older Calgary homes.

A hidden leak

Water escaping in a wall, under a floor or on the incoming line lowers pressure at the taps. If pressure has fallen gradually and the water bill has crept up, see leak detection.

Low Water Pressure Calgary — FAQs

Should I call 311 or a plumber about low water pressure in Calgary?

Call 311 when it looks like the City's side: neighbours have it too, there's a main break or crews nearby, you suspect the service valve, or it's winter and the pressure has been dropping gradually, which can mean a frozen service. Otherwise, call a plumber when it's only your house, only the hot water, or the softener test pointed at the softener.

Why is only my hot water pressure low?

Something is restricting the part of the system only hot water passes through: the heater, its valves or the hot lines. Scale and a partly closed valve are both possibilities. The City's advice here is to call a plumber.

Can low pressure in winter mean a frozen line?

Yes. The City says a gradual drop in winter could be a sign of frozen water lines, and lists frost on the main shut-off and very little water at the taps as other signs. Don't use any open flame to thaw it. Report it to 311. The City may send a crew and will also try to thaw the part on your property once you sign its work authorization. Repairs to the service on private property are the owner's cost, and you can choose to hire a plumber at your own expense.

How much does it cost to fix low water pressure?

It depends on the cause: an aerator you clean yourself, or corroded pipe that has to be replaced. We find the cause and price the repair before any work starts. Quotes are free.

Is it different in Airdrie?

Only a little. As in Calgary, the property line is the boundary: the City of Airdrie owns the line up to it, and you own it from there in. If pressure suddenly drops very low or the water stops, contact Airdrie Water Services at 403.948.8871. We dispatch from both Calgary and Airdrie.
