Walden Plumbers Calgary: Plumbing and Heating for Homes Mostly Built After 2010

5.0· 100+ Google reviewsRed SealAlberta LicensedBBB Accredited

Hiring a plumber in Walden, Calgary means working on a young house: the City's 2021 census profile lists no homes in the community older than 2001, and nine in ten were built from 2011 onward. That points the work at first replacements of what the builder put in, such as the original water heater, furnace or sump pump, rather than repiping or untangling decades of old renovations. Water and drain work is done by our Red Seal journeyman plumbers, and gas connections by our Alberta-licensed gas fitters.

Walden is a south-east community with Macleod Trail SE along its west side and 194 Avenue SE along its north, where Chaparral begins across the road; Legacy and Wolf Willow also border it, and Silverado and Belmont sit across Macleod Trail. The 2021 census counted 7,650 residents in 2,785 occupied homes. Households averaged 2.8 people, a little above Calgary's 2.6, and 82% owned rather than rented. Most of them were recent arrivals, too: 65% had moved in within the previous five years, so a lot of owners are still learning how their house works.

A little over half of Walden's homes (56%) are single-detached. The rest are low-rise apartments (19%), row houses (14%), semi-detached homes (10%) and a few duplex flats, with no high-rises at all. As builder-installed equipment ages, the likely jobs are furnace replacement, a first hot water tank replacement, and drain cleaning once the main drain starts running slow. Walden is one of the communities covered by our SE Calgary plumbers.

What a 2010s build means for a Walden house

By the City's count, 52% of Walden's homes were built between 2016 and 2021, 38% between 2011 and 2015 and 9% between 2001 and 2010, with none older. So the typical house is still running on the equipment it was handed over with, and the newest may still have some warranty coverage left.

Check the builder's warranty first

Alberta requires a new home warranty on houses built since February 1, 2014. The minimums are one year on labour and materials, two years on delivery and distribution systems (plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical), five years on the building envelope and ten on the structure. If a plumbing or heating defect shows up while that coverage is active, the builder or the warranty provider is the first call, not us. Your warranty documents give the start date and say whether your policy goes past the minimum.

Most equipment is still the original

In a house built since 2011 that hasn't had work done, the water heater, furnace and any sump pump are probably the ones the builder installed. You can date the first two yourself: the label on the side of a water heater carries a serial number with the year of manufacture coded into it, and the furnace has a similar plate. When something stops working, the real question is whether the failed part is worth fixing. A burner, ignition or thermostat fault on a tank that's otherwise sound usually is. A tank leaking from its own shell isn't, because there's nothing to repair. We'll tell you plainly which case you're in; water heater repair covers the fixable faults.

New to the house?

With so many Walden owners only a few years in, it's worth finding four things before you need them. First, the main water shutoff, normally on the incoming pipe next to the water meter in the basement or utility room. Second, the basement floor drain, which should stay uncovered by boxes or flooring. Third, the sump pit, if the house has one. Fourth, the access cover for a backwater valve, if one was ever installed. In a condo suite, ask the property manager where your unit's shutoff is.

Condensing furnaces in a Calgary winter

Under federal efficiency rules, gas furnaces made from December 31, 2009 had to reach at least 90% AFUE, and the minimum rose to 95% in July 2019. A house built in Walden after 2010 would have been fitted with a condensing furnace, and those behave differently from the older chimney-vented kind when the weather turns.

How it vents

A condensing furnace takes so much heat out of its exhaust that water forms inside it. The exhaust leaves cool enough to run through plastic pipe, usually PVC, out an exterior wall, and many units have a second pipe bringing in outside air for combustion. The condensate is piped to a nearby floor drain; if none is close enough, a small condensate pump lifts it to one.

Cold-snap shutdowns

Two things commonly stop a condensing furnace during a hard freeze: snow drifts or frost building up over the intake and exhaust terminals on the outside wall, or the condensate line freezing so the water has nowhere to go. Either one can trip a safety switch and shut the heat off. The part that's safe for you to handle is outside: brush snow away from the terminals and keep the area around them clear. Leave the furnace cabinet, the wiring and the gas alone. If the pipes outside are clear and the heat still doesn't come back, book a furnace repair; our no-heat page explains the other likely causes.

Replacing the furnace

When the original furnace is due, a new install is $4,500 to $9,600 as of September 2026. Where a job lands in that range depends on the equipment and what the venting, gas line and ducts need. The replacement is sized to the house itself: its insulation, windows and air leakage, checked against Calgary's design temperature, not to the old unit's badge. FlameTech is an authorized AirEase dealer, and we also work on other makes. Our furnace replacement page covers what the day looks like, and furnace replacement cost in Calgary breaks down the price.

Adding a heat pump or mini split

A heat pump added alongside the furnace can carry the heating through milder weather, leave the gas furnace for deep cold, and provide air conditioning in summer. It's $6,200 to $8,800 as of September 2026. If only one room is the problem, a bonus room over the garage, say, a ductless mini split, $3,500 to $5,000 as of September 2026, is the narrower fix. For the trade-offs, read heat pump vs furnace in Calgary.

Hot water for full houses

Walden households averaged 2.8 people in 2021, and 22% of residents were under 15. Showers, baths, laundry and the dishwasher tend to bunch together in a family house, and that's when a tank that's too small makes itself known.

Tank replacement prices

As of September 2026, an atmospheric tank, the kind that vents through a metal pipe without a fan, is $1,950 for 40 gallons, $2,100 for 50, $2,450 for 60 and $2,990 for 75. If yours has a fan motor on top and plastic vent pipe to an outside wall, it's a power-vent tank, and those are quoted separately. Running out of hot water before everyone has showered is a reason to price the next size up, as long as it fits the space and the venting. See hot water tank replacement and hot water tank replacement cost in Calgary.

Going tankless

A tankless water heater is $5,400 to $6,500 as of September 2026. It heats water as it flows, so it doesn't run out the way a tank does, but its flow rate has a ceiling, and two showers plus a washing machine can hit it. It also needs enough gas supply and its own vent.

Hard water

Calgary's water is hard, and the scale settles in tank bottoms and coats the heat exchanger in a tankless unit. A water softener is $2,250 to $3,050 and a reverse osmosis drinking-water system is $780 to $1,440, both as of September 2026. How often a particular tank or tankless heater should be flushed depends on the model and your water, so go by the manufacturer's manual.

Townhouses, semis and condo units

Of Walden's homes, 44% are something other than a single-detached house, and 18% rent rather than own. Both change who makes the first call.

Renting

The landlord or property manager comes before any plumber; they may have a regular one or want to sign off on the job. If water is leaking, close the nearest valve first and then call them.

Owning a townhouse or condo unit

Your condo corporation's bylaws decide which pipes, drains and equipment belong to you and which are common property, and the line is drawn differently in every building. Check before booking anything that serves more than one unit or runs through a shared wall. The same goes for a new vent or an outdoor heat pump unit on common property.

Basements, sump pits and backwater valves

In a house with a basement, the floor drain is the lowest opening in the plumbing, so it's where drain and sewer trouble shows up first.

Main drain clearing and camera footage

A toilet that bubbles while the washer empties, or water pooling around the basement floor drain after someone showers upstairs, suggests a partly blocked main line. We clear it, then send a camera through to find the cause, and the video is yours. We don't repair, excavate or reline sewer pipe; if the footage shows a crack or a collapse, take it to an excavation contractor for a price on the repair. More on drain cleaning.

Sump pumps

Some houses have no sump pit at all. In one that does, a failed pump gets replaced, not repaired. As of September 2026, swapping in a ProFlo 1/2 HP pump is about $504, and putting in a new pit and pump is around $2,000. Details are on our sump pump page.

Backwater valves

A backwater valve is a one-way flap on the main drain: household wastewater flows out, and if the city sewer surcharges, the flap shuts so sewage can't come up through your floor drain. The City of Calgary notes that not every home has one, that installing one requires a plumbing permit, and that it has to be serviced and maintained afterwards. Whether one is worth adding depends on the basement and the route of the main line, so we look before we quote. If water keeps coming in, why a basement floods every time it rains walks through the usual causes.

Developing the basement

If you're finishing the basement and want a bathroom down there, sort out the bathroom plumbing rough-in before the walls go up. If a backwater valve is on your list, raise it at the same stage, before finished flooring goes down.

Walden plumbing and heating questions

Is Walden in your service area?

Yes. Walden sits within the SE Calgary communities we serve. Arrival times aren't something we promise, and we dispatch from both Calgary and Airdrie; call 587-834-3668 and we'll tell you honestly when we can get there.

My house is from 2019. Should I call the builder first?

Look at your warranty paperwork first. Alberta's minimum coverage for plumbing and heating systems is two years, so a 2019 house is probably past it unless your policy runs longer. If coverage is still active, the builder or warranty provider should handle a defect. If it has run out, we can quote the repair.

Why does my furnace shut off in a cold snap?

On a condensing furnace, two common causes are snow or frost blocking the intake and exhaust pipes on the outside wall, and a frozen condensate line. Brushing snow away from those outside pipes is fine to do yourself. Don't open the furnace or touch the gas or wiring. If the heat doesn't come back, call us.

Can you repair my sump pump?

No, failed sump pumps get replaced. As of September 2026, replacing the pump with a ProFlo 1/2 HP is about $504, and a new pit plus pump runs around $2,000.

Will you repair a cracked sewer pipe?

No. We clear the line and run a camera through it, and you keep the footage. An excavation contractor can use that recording to quote the repair.
