Heat Pump Installation in Okotoks
Heat pump installation in Okotoks for homes with forced-air heat: a ducted air-source heat pump that heats and cools through the ducts you already have, usually paired with your gas furnace as a dual-fuel system. We size it to the house, not to whatever was there before, and you get the price in writing before any work starts.
We install heat pumps in Okotoks, and we dispatch from both Calgary and Airdrie. Call and we'll tell you honestly when we can get there. The quote visit is free, and it's where we look at your house properly instead of guessing over the phone.
Four things shape the install: the furnace you have now, the ductwork, how much room is left in the electrical panel, and where an outdoor unit can sit. We look at all four before we put a number on paper.

Which heat pump setup suits your house
If your house has a gas furnace and ducts, one of the first three options below usually fits. Which one depends on the state of the furnace and whether there's an air conditioner outside. A heat pump with only electric backup heat is possible, but in a house already on gas it rarely makes sense to give up the furnace.
Adding to the furnace you have
This is the dual-fuel setup. The heat pump handles the heating through the milder part of winter and all of the cooling in summer. When it gets cold enough that gas is the better tool, the furnace takes over. It only works if the furnace's blower and controls can run with a heat pump, and we check that at the quote visit. Our heat pump vs furnace comparison covers the running-cost side.
Heat pump plus a new furnace
If the furnace is worn out or can't be paired with a heat pump, the two go in together as a matched set. That means two pieces of equipment and two prices on the quote, so you can see what each one costs. The furnace replacement page explains what changing a furnace involves.
Swapping out an old central AC
When the air conditioner outside is on its way out, a heat pump can take its place. It cools the house through the same ducts the AC used, and it heats for part of the year as well. Taking out the old unit is listed on the quote.
One room, not the whole house
A hot bonus room or a basement with no ducts is usually better served by a ductless mini split. Those run $3,500 to $5,000 with us as of September 2026, and they're a separate install from a ducted heat pump.
What a heat pump installation in Okotoks costs
The house moves the price more than the outdoor unit does. Here's how the numbers come together.
Our installed range
Our heat pump installs run $6,200 to $8,800 as of September 2026, the range Calgary and Airdrie installs are priced on; an Okotoks install gets its own written quote at no charge, and that's the number that counts. Where your house lands depends on the equipment you choose and what the ducts and connections need.
What's priced separately
A new furnace is its own job, and furnace installs run $4,500 to $9,600 as of September 2026. If the electrical panel needs an upgrade or the ducts need changes before a heat pump can go in, that work is on the quote too, so you see it before you agree to anything.
Rebates and financing
Plan the job as if no rebate is coming. Programs open and close, and it's better to decide on the real price. The Town of Okotoks runs a Clean Energy Improvement Program, which offers financing for energy upgrades. The Town's page, updated 10 March 2026, says the program is at capacity and has a waitlist. If you'd like to spread the cost, see financing. Our heat pump cost guide goes through the numbers in more detail.
Built for cold snaps and chinooks
Okotoks winters swing between hard cold and chinook thaws. A heat pump installed for that weather looks a little different from one installed somewhere mild.
Low-temperature output, not label capacity
The heating capacity a spec sheet leads with is rated in mild weather, and output drops as it gets colder. What matters for a house here is how much heat the unit still delivers on a cold day. That's the figure worth comparing between models.
Where the furnace takes over
In a dual-fuel system, the thermostat or control board decides when to stop the heat pump and light the furnace. The right switch-over point depends on the equipment and on what you pay for gas and electricity, so we set it for your system when we commission it and show you where it is. If a heat pump ever seems to fall behind, it's the first setting worth checking.
Defrost cycles are normal
In damp weather near freezing, frost builds on the outdoor coil. The heat pump clears it by briefly running in reverse, and you may see steam coming off the unit or hear a whoosh as it switches over. On a dual-fuel system, the furnace can keep the house warm while that happens. Our post on a heat pump not warming the house explains what's normal and what points to a fault.
Up out of the snow, with meltwater going somewhere safe
The outdoor unit sits on a stand or bracket high enough to stay clear of drifting snow, because a buried coil can't draw heat from the air. Defrost water has to go somewhere too, and if it ends up across a path it freezes overnight. We place the unit so that water drains away from steps, walkways and the driveway.
Permits for a heat pump in Okotoks
What's needed depends on where the house is, so we confirm which permits your install needs when we quote.
Inside town limits
The Town of Okotoks guide Permits for Clean Energy Improvements lists an air-source heat pump as needing a plumbing and gas permit. The same guide lists replacing a central air conditioner as needing both an electrical permit and a plumbing and gas permit. The guide itself says it has no legal status, so treat it as a starting point. The Town's residential permits page covers the wider rules.
Acreages outside town limits
If your property is in Foothills County rather than inside the town, your permits come from the County, not the Town of Okotoks. Gas permits are among those listed in the County's fee schedule.
Gas work stays with a licensed gas fitter
Tying a heat pump into a gas furnace means working on the furnace's controls, and replacing a furnace means gas piping. Both are jobs for an Alberta-licensed gas fitter, and we have them on the team. There's no need to take panels off the furnace or touch the thermostat wiring before the quote visit.

Tell us about the house
Give us your Okotoks address, how the house is heated now and whether there's a central air conditioner outside. We'll be honest about when we can come out to look.
Look at what's already there
We check the furnace, the ductwork, the electrical panel and the spots where an outdoor unit could go. We also note what sets the size: insulation, windows, air leakage and the design temperature.
Put it in writing
The quote lists the make and model, what's included, any electrical or duct work, removal of the old AC if there is one, the permits the job needs, and the price.
Install and commission
Once you give the go-ahead, we install the system and run it through a full heating cycle and a full cooling cycle. Before we leave, we walk you through the thermostat and explain what a defrost cycle looks and sounds like.
