Over an existing slab you're looking at a low-profile panel system or a thin over-pour. Both work well. Both raise the finished floor height, which affects door clearances and the bottom stair riser, so it needs checking before you commit rather than discovering during the build.

If the basement is being developed anyway, this is the cheapest moment it will ever be — everything is open and the flooring hasn't gone down yet.

For a working shop, in our view yes. Even heat across a large floor with no fan noise and nothing blowing sawdust around, and a slab that dries a vehicle rather than just warming the air near it.

For a garage you park in and little else, an overhead gas heater does the job for considerably less and we'll tell you that rather than sell you the bigger system.

Either way, a slab loop in an unheated-if-it-fails space needs glycol. That isn't optional.

Nearly always a stuck zone valve actuator or air trapped in that loop.

We isolate at the manifold, confirm whether the valve actually opens when the thermostat calls, and purge if it's air. Both are usually resolved in one visit.

If it's neither, a failed circulator or a drifted balancing valve are next, and both are still typically same-visit work.

If nobody has tested it since installation, it's worth checking.

Glycol contains corrosion inhibitors that deplete over time. Once they're spent, the glycol turns acidic and starts attacking the metal in the system it was installed to protect — pumps, fittings, and the boiler heat exchanger.

Testing is quick. Replacing spent glycol is far cheaper than replacing what it damages.

Carpet is the one to plan for. Thick carpet over a heavy underlay is effectively insulation sitting between the heat and the room. It can be accommodated, but only if we know at design stage — retrofitting the design after the carpet is chosen doesn't work.
