What you're more likely to find is early copper supply and cast-iron drain stacks. Copper of that vintage is often sound, though it can thin at soldered joints.

A condensing boiler only reaches its rated efficiency when water returning from the system is cool enough to condense the flue gases. Radiator systems from the 1950s were designed to run hot. If the radiators are undersized for a lower operating temperature, the boiler simply never condenses.

We check radiator sizing against your home's heat loss, set the outdoor reset curve to run as cool as the house allows, and tell you honestly if upsizing a radiator or two would change the outcome. These systems also need a power flush and a magnetic filter first — decades of iron sludge will block a modern heat exchanger.

Worth saying: most of the radiant faults we're called out to on newer systems trace back to commissioning rather than the appliance. A system that was never properly balanced will underperform for its entire life, and it's much cheaper to get right at the start.

Nearly always one of two things: a stuck zone valve actuator, or air trapped in that loop.

Both are usually diagnosed and fixed in a single visit. We isolate by zone at the manifold, confirm whether the valve is actually opening, and purge the loop if it's air.

If it turns out to be neither, the next candidates are a failed circulator or a balancing valve that's drifted out of adjustment — still same-visit work in most cases.

If you have a combi boiler, that pattern points squarely at a scaled domestic hot water heat exchanger.

A combi has two heat exchangers, one for space heating and one for hot water. The hot water side has narrow internal passages, and Calgary's hard water scales them aggressively. Space heating keeps working normally while hot water output falls off.

Descaling restores it in most cases. Severely scaled exchangers occasionally need replacing. Annual boiler service plus a water softener upstream is what stops it recurring.
