AC Repair in Chestermere
AC repair in Chestermere usually means looking at two machines, not one. In a typical furnace-heated home, the cooling coil is mounted directly above the furnace, the furnace blower pushes the cooled air through the ducts, and the coil's drain runs out beside it, so a cooling fault can be in the outdoor unit, at the furnace, or a refrigerant leak somewhere in between. FlameTech finds which one, prices the repair before any work starts, and tells you plainly when replacing the system is the better use of your money.
We repair central air that has stopped cooling properly: an outdoor unit that won't start or only hums, vents blowing room-temperature air, ice forming on the copper lines, or water pooling around the furnace in the middle of summer. FlameTech is an authorized AirEase dealer, and we're licensed and insured. If you'd like to match your symptoms first, our guide to the signs of air conditioner problems explains what each one tends to point to.

Where a cooling fault usually sits
Each symptom narrows the search. None of them, on its own, tells you which part has failed.
Outdoor unit humming, fan standing still
That pattern usually points to the electrical side of the outdoor unit: the parts that help the compressor and fan motors start, or the switch that sends them power once the thermostat asks for cooling. A seized fan motor can do the same thing. These components carry high voltage and some can hold a charge after the power is off, so leave the panels on and let us test them.
Weak airflow or ice on the lines
Ice on the copper lines at the furnace, or air that barely moves at the vents, often starts with airflow across the indoor coil: a plugged filter, dust built up on the coil, or a blower that's slowing down. That blower also heats the house in winter, so a fault here is shared with the furnace; see furnace repair in Chestermere and our furnace blower issues page. A low refrigerant charge can ice a coil too, which is why we check both. Our article on an AC that runs but sends no air from the vents covers the airflow side in more detail.
Water around the furnace
The indoor coil pulls moisture out of the house air as it cools, and that water runs through a pan and a drain line, ending at a floor drain or, where none is nearby, a condensate pump. A blocked line, a cracked pan or a pump that no longer switches on sends the water onto the furnace or the floor instead. Our article on why an AC drip pan keeps filling up explains what to look for.
It runs for hours and the house stays warm
A system that runs long stretches while the vents deliver air that's cool but never cold can be short of refrigerant. Refrigerant doesn't wear out, so a low charge means it leaked, at a fitting, a valve, the line set or one of the coils. We locate the leak before pricing anything, because where it is decides whether repair is sensible.
Before you book: safe checks only
These take a few minutes and occasionally solve the problem. Anything beyond them is a job for a technician.
Thermostat settings
Check that the thermostat's mode reads cool, its set point is lower than the current room temperature, and its fan setting is auto. A fan left on keeps the blower going between cooling cycles, pushing unchilled house air out of the registers, which can feel like the AC has quit. If the thermostat runs on batteries, weak ones can stop it calling for cooling.
The furnace filter
If the filter slot opens without tools, slide the filter out and look at it. A filter matted with dust restricts the air moving over the coil. Replace it with the size printed on its frame, following your furnace manual.
If the lines are iced
Turn the thermostat's cooling mode off and leave only the fan running, so the blower moves warm house air across the coil and melts the ice. Leave cooling off until the cause has been found; running the air conditioner against a frozen coil risks damaging the compressor. Let the ice melt on its own, because scraping or chipping can puncture the coil or the lines, and expect extra water at the drain while it thaws.
A tripped breaker
If the breaker for the air conditioner or the furnace has tripped, you can switch it back on one time. Should it trip a second time, keep it off and give us a call. A breaker that keeps tripping is protecting the wiring from a fault, and resetting it over and over can make that fault worse.
What to leave alone
Don't remove the outdoor unit's access panels, open the disconnect box beside it, or touch any electrical part inside the unit or the furnace. Don't add refrigerant from a store-bought can or open any service valve. Those steps carry real electrical and refrigerant hazards, and they can hide the fault we need to find.
Repair, or replace the system?
When repair is the right call
A failed electrical part in the outdoor unit, a blocked drain, a condensate pump that has stopped, or a leak at an accessible fitting are generally repairable on a system that's otherwise sound. We price the repair and the decision stays with you.
When replacement deserves a look
A leak in the indoor or outdoor coil, a failed compressor, or parts that are no longer available change the sums. In those cases we explain what we found and lay out the cost of fixing it against the cost of replacing the system, and a replacement quote is free and in writing. Our page on air conditioning installation in Chestermere explains how we assess and quote a new system.
Older systems and their refrigerant
Some older central air systems run on R-22, an HCFC refrigerant. Environment and Climate Change Canada says Canada "reduced its consumption and production of HCFCs by 99.5% by 2020 and will phase them out completely by 2030, except for very limited and specific applications" (Environment and Climate Change Canada). If your system uses an HCFC and the fault is on the refrigerant side, that belongs in the repair-or-replace decision, and we'll explain how it affects your options.
If the outdoor unit is a heat pump
A heat pump's outdoor unit looks much like an air conditioner's, but it also heats the house in milder weather. Faults on those are covered on our heat pump repair page. If you end up replacing a straight air conditioner, a heat pump is worth pricing alongside it.
Chestermere AC repair questions
Does FlameTech repair air conditioners in Chestermere?
Yes. Chestermere is part of our Calgary-area coverage, and we dispatch from both Calgary and Airdrie. Call 587-834-3668 and we'll tell you honestly when we can get there.
What will the repair cost?
That depends on what failed and what it takes to fix, so we don't publish a price for AC repair. Once we've found the fault, you get the repair price before any work starts. Ask about the visit arrangements when you book.
Can't you just top up the refrigerant?
Adding refrigerant without finding the leak cools the house for a while, then the charge drops and the same symptoms come back. A low charge means refrigerant escaped, so we find the leak and price the repair. If the leak is in a coil or somewhere that makes repair poor value, we say so and explain the alternatives.
Is it worth repairing an older air conditioner?
The year on the label is only one factor. We weigh the failed part, how sound everything else in the system is, whether parts are still available, the refrigerant it uses and the repair price. A modest repair on a sound older system can be good value; a dead compressor or a coil leak on the same unit often isn't. We set out both sides and you choose.

Describe the symptoms
Give us your address, what the system is doing and roughly how old the furnace and air conditioner are. We confirm a date with you and explain the visit arrangements.
Find the fault
We work through the outdoor unit, then airflow and the coil at the furnace, then the condensate drain. Refrigerant pressures are checked after those, because poor airflow can make a healthy charge read wrong.
Explain and price the repair
We show you what failed and give you the repair price before any work. If the repair needs an ordered part or a second visit, you'll hear that from us once it's clear.
Repair and run it
After the agreed repair, we run the system through a cooling cycle and check that the air at the supply vents is noticeably cooler than the air returning to the furnace.
